>Salt Lake Weekly
Pick of the Week
Even as fire consumes large swaths of Southern California, one can’t help but think, “We’ll always have Silverlake.” The hip Los Angeles neighborhood might seem artificial, with its dive bars, hot restaurants and pretty young things trying to look gritty, but there’s something about the signature sound that its buzz bands produce that places it on par with the world’s most romantic cities. Gliss is one such band. The pretty young trio (who take their look with a hefty grain of salt) draws on both the region’s storied psychedelic garage-rock and slick glam-pop for the highs and lows of Love the Virgins. Like a sexy slacker in one of Bret Eaton Ellis’ drugged-out fantasies, singer Martin Klingman delivers each line like he’s about to orgasm (or fall apart). Burn, baby, burn.
